By law the death of any person in this country has to be registered by the Registrar of Births and Deaths in the Sub-District Registry Office where the death occurred.

A list of the local Registry Offices and Maps is given below, but if you are unsure which office is applicable, do not hesitate to contact ourselves and we will advise you where you should register the death and opening times of the particular office.

Subject to the death occurring locally, we can always provide transport and accompany you to the relevant Registry Office should you wish.

The following persons are eligible to Register the Death:
  • Any Relative (The next of kin preferred).
  • Any Person present at the death.
  • The occupier of the place of death (in the case of a death at a Residential or Nursing Home either the Owner or Matron in charge).
The Registrar will require the following information:
  • The Medical Cause of Death Certificate (unless the Coroner has ordered a post mortem to determine the cause of death).
  • The full name of the deceased (and maiden name of a married lady).
  • The date and place of death.
  • The date and district of birth of the deceased.
  • The normal residence of the deceased.
  • The occupation of the deceased.
  • Details of the deceased's spouse (if married).
  • The deceased's Medical Card (if available).
  • Whether the deceased was receiving a State or Civil Service Pension.
  • Details of the informant i.e. the person registering the death.
REGISTRATION AFTER THE CORONER
In cases that are referred to the Coroner the Registrar will require additional information from the Coroner before the death can be registered. To avoid a wasted journey, we suggest that, before leaving for the Registry Office, a telephone call is made to ensure they are in receipt of this information:

Registrar Form 100 part A (Pink) where the death has been referred to the Coroner but no Post Mortem or Inquest is deemed necessary.

Registrar Form 100 part B (Pink) where a Post Mortem has been carried out, but no Inquest is ordered.

Coroner's Certificate after Inquest Form 99 (White) after an Inquest has been completed.

AFTER REGISTRATION
Once the Registry Book has been signed by the informant, the Registrar will issue the following:

A Certificate for Burial or Cremation (Green) This Certificate should be delivered to us as soon as possible. Please do not send it by post, otherwise the funeral will have to be postponed if lost. If there is any difficulty, we can arrange to collect this certificate. In circumstances where the deceased died elsewhere in the United Kingdom, this certificate should be left with the body at either the hospital, public mortuary or the Funeral Director who carried out the removal on our behalf.

A Certificate of Registration of Death Form BD 8 (White) which is for Social Security purpose only. Read the information on the back of this certificate. If any of it applies, fill in the certificate and send it (with the deceased's pension book if they had one) to the nearest Social Security office.

Certified Copy of the Death Certificate (Grey). A statutory fee is payable (currently £3.50 : Aug 2001) to the Registrar for each copy, therefore consideration should be made as to how many copies are required. Photostat copies of this certificate are not acceptable to certain Banks, Insurance Companies etc., but they should return any original Certified Copies of the Death Certificate once they have sight of it. Where a Will exists, the Executor will require a copy. Two or three copies of this Certificate are sufficient in most cases.

Appropriate Social Security leaflets may be on display at the Registrar's Office, for a general idea of the range of the Social Security benefits available following a death.
